The latest block
The most recent block the API serves, with its header and the totals of what it contains — transaction counts by outcome, gas, fees, value moved, withdrawals. It is the cheapest way to learn the current height before asking for anything at a block.
GET https://tracefast.xyz/api/v1/chains/1/blocks/latest
The method takes no parameters.
Access — an API key on the Enriched Data plan or higher (plans), or no key at all: pay per call with x402 at the same path on https://mpp.tracefast.xyz/api/v1, at the price its 402 states. As a tool for AI agents: get_latest_block on the MCP server. Stable — see stability.
chains/1 is a literal: the method serves Ethereum mainnet data. Other chain
ids answer 404 chain_not_supported. Any query parameter is refused rather
than ignored — blocks/latest?block=5 answers
400 bad_request with reason: unknown_parameter.
Response
200 application/json — the same body as one block:

}data.number is the height, and meta.asOfBlock equals it. The field
reference — header, totals, and which totals can be absent — is on
one block.
Reading it
- The newest blocks carry fewer fields. In the example,
withdrawalCountis absent althoughtotalWithdrawalGweiis positive: the count is not stated yet for the newest blocks. Absent is "not stated", never zero.uniqueAddressCountandblobBaseFeeWeiare absent for the same reason. Asking for the same block by height does not add them; older blocks carry all three. - "Latest" is the newest block the API serves, not necessarily the chain's head at the moment you ask. It follows the chain within seconds.
- Two calls can disagree. A new block arrives about every 12 seconds, so
take the height from this response and pass it to block-keyed methods rather
than calling
latesttwice. - Not every block-keyed method reaches this height.
Authorizations answer from a history that
trails the head, and refuse a newer block with
422 block_not_availableand the highest block they can answer — see data freshness.
Errors
This method has no errors of its own. Unknown parameters and the key check's 401/403/429 are the same for every method — see conventions and API keys.
